Enadia Way Technology Charter

Principal’s Message

Week of August 20, 2018

Welcome New Families!

Thank you to all Enadia Way parents and especially our new Enadia families who made the first week of school run so smoothly. Thank you to the new families for going with the flow and learning about how our school works, especially at drop off and dismissal! The first week went very smoothly. We even had our first fire drill on Friday and you would never know that our kindergartners were new at it. The students rated themselves a “thumbs up” and so do I!

Uniform Reminders

This week I will send home individual reminders to parents whose children are only partially in uniform. White polo shirts are NOT one of our uniform colors (light blue and navy blue only)! Also, black leggings are not permitted unless worn under a uniform! I spoke to several students privately last week and I know that many parents are still acquiring uniforms. If you have a financial hardship, please let the main office know if you would like some help getting uniforms. We have many sets of clean gently used uniforms that we will gladly donate to students in need. Spirit wear pre-orders are accepted through 8/23! Please fill out the attached form with payment.

Summer Math Challenge & DJ Dance Party, 8/30, 1-2pm

This week all students in grades 1-5th will be taking the timed math test for their grade level to see who will attend the DJ Dance Party! Good luck! Students passing the tests (grade level specific) to determine math fluency will participate in a professionally DJ’d dance party. The DJ promises to bring light sticks in addition to his strobe lights! Those students passing will receive a certificate and will be allowed to wear free dress on the day of the Dance Party!

Enrollment/Class Change Requests

I hope that you and your child are happy with your classroom assignment.  The teachers and I carefully considered classroom placement for each child based on many factors. All classroom assignments are tentative until “norm day” which is the 2nd Friday in September, pending enrollment finalization. If your child is unhappy with his/her classroom assignment, you may submit in writing to me a request for a change. But I will not be able to consider the request, nor respond until norm day. Thank you for your understanding!

Meal Applications

Please submit the paper application immediately, or, if you haven’t done so already, please go online to www.lausd.net to apply for free or reduced meals.  Even if you don’t use the meal program and prefer to pack a lunch, it is critical for our school’s funding that all families who are eligible for free or reduced meals apply annually! This year full price lunch is $3.00! To avoid lost lunch money it is preferable that you add money to your child’s account by giving cash to Miss Blanca, the Cafeteria Manager, or go online and use “My Payment Plus.” You will need your child’s 10 digit ID to apply. Go to www.enadiaway.org and click on Cafeteria for the links.

School Volunteers Needed!

Last week Jessica Soto, our Parent-Community Rep, began “rolling over” last year’s volunteers and really got an earful from some parents. There is a new LAUSD Volunteer and Fingerprinting mandate to ensure the safety of the students during school hours. The process is this:

  • Anyone volunteering on campus in any capacity (even those who are only coming in once for a class party)-must be cleared through Megan’s Law sex offender database (this is a simple process that anyone can do by entering the name into the Megan’s Law database). One time volunteers must submit a “Single Event Volunteer” application prior to participating in the activity (i.e. College & Career Day, classroom party).
  • Any volunteer who wishes to help out in the office, Parent Center, morning valet drop off, garden, or serve as a chaperone on a field trip-must also have a current TB clearance (renewable every 4 years) in addition to Megan’s Law clearance.
  • Any volunteer who wishes to work directly with students either in the classrooms (i.e. read/tutor students, work with small groups, or yard or lunch supervision)-must also be fingerprinted and cleared through DOJ and FBI databases, in addition to TB clearance, and in addition to Megan’s Law clearance.
  • Any volunteer who wants to volunteer 16 or more hours a week must be fingerprinted, have TB clearance, and Megan’s Law clearance.
  • Any parent who wishes to observe his/her child’s classroom does not need to go through any of these processes! Observations are merely that. The parent is not allowed to interrupt or interact with either the teacher or students during the observation period. Parents sign in in the Main Office to gain admission. The teacher has the right to say if it is a good time for an observation or not depending on the activity happening at that time (i.e. taking a test).

Many parents say that they already have fingerprint clearance for their job or other volunteer experiences. Unfortunately, LAUSD now requires that the school make an appointment with one of LAUSD’s fingerprinting offices. The school will then get the OK from the Office of Human Relations for the parent to volunteer once the results come back. The fee is $56 for fingerprinting (paid to LAUSD who in turn pay the DOJ and FBI).The good news is that as long as the parent remains an active volunteer, you only need to be fingerprinted ONCE! The bad news is that the fingerprinting offices are booked through mid-September and there is up to a month or more before the school is given the OK for the parent to volunteer! L

Popsicle Sales

Starting this Friday we sell popsicles (and sometimes popcorn) after school in the lunch pavilion area. It costs $1 and all funds raised support our Student Body for field trips, assemblies, and the like. Please give your child $1 on Fridays, or come by yourself after school!

Back to School Night & Uniform Sales, 8/30!

Please mark your calendar for Back to School Night! This is an adult meeting, so if at all possible, please keep the kids at home. The meeting is in the auditorium from 4:30-5:00 with classroom visitations from 5-6pm. Carrusel will be back selling embroidered polos in front of the school from 2pm-6pm.
